Generating Insights
From Heterogeneous Data Is Difficult
You need curated, fit-for-purpose data
To leverage your data for powerful data-driven decisions you need to analyze all your data, not just the structured data. This is difficult because data comes from a variety of sources and needs to be integrated, curated, governed, secured, up-to-date, and fit-for-purpose for downstream use.
Without the foundation to curate good data, you lose the intelligence to make timely decisions. You risk not being able to understand your customer needs. And, you risk missing opportunities to improve operations and productivity. In a survey of 1,900 data experts, almost 50% of them said that “Disorganized data stores and lack of metadata” was a primary data quality issue their organization faced.
You need answers to all your questions, not just the simple ones
When you have good data, you can ask better business questions to derive better insights. While you might have the capability to use SQL to get some information, complex questions require the ability to run advanced queries with proper context in order to get complete answers.
Example Business Question: What is the Financial Impact of Coronary Bypass?
SQL Query |
Show me the average claim amount for bypass surgeries for male members over 50 in the mid-Atlantic region. |
Advanced Query |
Show me the average claim amount for bypass surgeries for male members over 50 in the mid-Atlantic region where the surgeon’s notes indicated a co-occurring condition. |
