SAN CARLOS, Calif. – October 28, 2009 – MarkLogic Corporation, a leading provider of infrastructure software for information applications, today announced that it has been named to the “Innovative Information Access Companies Under $100M to Watch1” list by industry analyst firm IDC, a premier global provider of market intelligence, advisory services, and events for the information technology, telecommunications, and consumer technology markets.
To identify the companies to watch, IDC solicited entries from information access vendors with annual revenues of less than $100 million that exemplified one or more of three trends in information access software today. Information access encompasses markets for business intelligence, data warehousing, data integration, search and discovery, and content management (including enterprise content management, Web content management, records management and digital asset management) software. These trends, cited in January 2009 as part of IDC’s applications predictions for the year, include:
According to IDC, “…MarkLogic has been an innovator in the area of XML servers, which provide a high-performance platform for accessing and manipulating XML content and data. MarkLogic Server has pioneered the use of XQuery, a query and programming language standard developed by W3C that enables applications to query XML collections. A key strength of XQuery lies in its ability to extract and manipulate XML information that comes from both documents and databases. XQuery is an important standard for the future of integrated access to content and data, and MarkLogic is an active contributor to the W3C working group that is defining it.”
The IDC study “Innovative Information Access Companies Under $100M to Watch” (Doc # 220450) profiles companies based on their demonstration of the three IDC evaluation criteria. These criteria were selected from IDC’s “Worldwide Information Access, Analysis and Management Software 2009 Top 10 Predictions” (Doc # 215811).
The consideration and analysis of companies for this document consisted of two rounds. The first round was completed by a group panel consisting of key analysts covering software information access. In the second phase, the narrowed list was reviewed by key IDC research executives. IDC’s “Companies to Watch” reports are a qualitative evaluation of a set of vendors within a specific market – they are not a stack ranking nor do they represent an exhaustive evaluation of all companies in a segment or a comparative ranking of the companies in the report.
“We’re thrilled to be recognized as a hot emerging player in information access technologies by IDC, one of the most respected thought-leaders in the industry,” said Dave Kellogg, chief executive officer, MarkLogic Corporation. “Our customers tell us that traditional DBMS and search technologies simply aren’t enough to meet the needs of today’s information applications. Whether a media company is building a custom publishing system or a healthcare organization is tracking electronic patient records, MarkLogic’s approach to managing unstructured data is truly innovative.”
