What’s New in MarkLogic 5?
MarkLogic is powering mission-critical Big Data Applications around the world. It is the first operational database technology capable of handling any data, at any volume, in any structure.
MarkLogic 5 gives you a first-to-information advantage by managing complexity and delivering confidence at scale in the enterprise.

New Feature Highlights
Rich Media Support
Rich Media Support lets you store and manage rich media like images or video along with textual data in MarkLogic. This helps to consolidate your infrastructure, reduce administrative costs, and speed up development of rich media applications. Rich Media Support also brings more peace of mind to organizations that need to ensure availability of their rich media assets by leveraging the high availability and disaster recovery capabilities of MarkLogic 5.
Document Filters
With Document Filters, you can search on over 200 document and rich media formats. This feature enables automatic extraction of metadata and text, and eliminates the cost of manually converting legacy formats.
MarkLogic Connector for Hadoop™
The MarkLogic Connector for Hadoop lets you combine brute force batch processing with MarkLogic’s capabilities for ad hoc, real-time analytics. With Hadoop, you run your specialized, low level batch processing on raw data, and the Connector for Hadoop brings in MarkLogic to let you run new, previously unanticipated queries on an ongoing basis. Learn more about combining the power of MarkLogic and Hadoop.
Database Replication
Database replication helps you to protect your Big Data solutions from site-wide disasters and reduce the risk and cost of unexpected downtime. Database replication is a high performance, low latency, and transaction aware system for creating exact database copies to remote sites. MarkLogic provides both a browser-based interface and an API, for configuration as well as recovery.
Point-in-time Recovery
Point-in-time recovery lets you recover from backups then roll forward using the transaction log to a specific point-in-time. This lets you minimize the window for lost data between the occurrence of a disaster and the time the last backup was taken.
Tiered Storage
You can boost your Big Data solution performance by adding a solid state drive (SSD) tier between memory and disk drives. MarkLogic manages the tier automatically, making it very easy to get the most out of fast, limited capacity drives.
Monitoring Dashboard
The Monitoring Dashboard gives you a browser-based view of your MarkLogic cluster’s instrumentation data, with real-time charts of metrics such as I/O rates and loads, request activity, and disk usage. This helps you to better understand the usage characteristics of your deployment and mitigate operational risks.
Monitoring and Management API
The Monitoring and Management API is a REST API for getting real-time metrics of your MarkLogic deployment, such as I/O rates and loads, request activity, and disk usage. You can seamlessly integrate with enterprise monitoring and reporting tools to improve system visibility.
Smart Plug-in for HP Operations Manager & Plugin for Nagios®
Monitor your MarkLogic cluster with the IT monitoring tool that you currently use for your existing infrastructure. MarkLogic supports out-of-the-box integration with HP Operations Manager and Nagios.
Configuration Manager
Extract, compare, and apply configuration settings between different environments for quick update and validation. You can track configuration changes and revert to previous versions in case of an error in your configuration settings.
Query Console
With this feature-rich, browser-based query interface, you can run ad hoc queries to quickly verify query output and performance. You can profile your code to help optimize queries running over huge data sets. Support for project workspaces simplifies code management.
REST Library
The REST Library simplifies the development of REST interfaces to access data stored in MarkLogic. With REST interfaces, you can more easily integrate MarkLogic into your existing infrastructure.
Distributed Transaction Support
Support for XA/JTA enables integration with a transaction manager to synchronize writes that span across MarkLogic and other repositories.
Geospatial Region Intersection and Containment
With geospatial region intersection capabilities, you can quickly calculate if a specified geographic region — defined as a polygon, box, or circle — intersects with other geographic regions. With containment, you can calculate if a specified geographic region entirely covers other geographic regions. These functions help to quickly and efficiently calculate geographical relationships.
The new rich media support in MarkLogic 5 enables management and in-depth analysis of content like pictures and video. MarkLogic 5 also gives enterprises greater peace of mind with several features to enhance business continuity and platform reliability.”

MarkLogic 5′s latest replication option allows us to easily distribute information across multiple sites and multiple applications. We are also very impressed with new monitoring features which help us more efficiently manage our operations.”
- Michael Hughes,
Head of Development, Springer
The updated query console makes it much easier for non-technical staff and new hires to quickly interrogate all of our unstructured information. With an integrated platform that includes market leading rich media support, MarkLogic 5 gives OSA a lot more options for managing images, multimedia movie files, and different forms of PDF content. Ultimately, these changes will go a long way towards improving our return on investment and on our ability to deliver content to our customers.”
