MarkLogic Helps Bowker Successfully Navigate Dynamic Publishing Market
Global Leader in Bibliographic Information Management Speeds Information Access While Reducing Annual Maintenance Costs with MarkLogic Server
SAN MATEO, CA — November 28, 2006 — MarkLogic Corporation, a leading provider of infrastructure software for information applications, today announced that Bowker, the global leader in bibliographic information management, has replaced its current information retrieval system – a combination of Verity search and an Oracle database – with MarkLogic Server. By integrating MarkLogic Server to store and provide ready access to the more than 15.3 million global book, audio book and video titles contained within the Bowker Books In Print® product, the industry‘s largest bibliographic database, Bowker has increased information retrieval speed, while reducing computing power to significantly decrease their annual maintenance costs.
“Bowker is dedicated to providing tools and services that present continual benefit to very member of the book industry,” said Mark Heinzelman, CIO of Bowker. “Because the XML format we use is very hierarchical, we were running into challenges at every turn with our former ‘flat’ information retrieval system. MarkLogic Server provides the perfect platform for our XML applications, giving us the flexibility we need to handle larger volumes of content today and over time.”
Bowker enables and promotes the flow of goods and information through the publishing supply chain with tools and services that benefit every member of the book industry: publishers, distributors, booksellers, libraries, academic institutions and research facilities. Using MarkLogic Server, Bowker is more responsive to its customers by making specific content instantaneously available, is able to handle larger volumes of content successfully, is provided a flexible platform on which to build future applications and has lowered overall systems operations costs by reducing the number of CPUs necessary to handle large amounts of information.
“Bowker is using the most appropriate technology solutions to provide searching, analytical, and ordering services to publishers, booksellers, libraries and patrons,” said Larry Rolnik, director of publishing sales at MarkLogic Corporation. “MarkLogic is pleased to be working with a company that appreciates the value of technology as much as we do.”
