XML Repository

Bringing together all of your organization’s content into an XML repository like MarkLogic Server is the critical first step on the path to getting more value out of your information. By using MarkLogic Server as your enterprise’s primary XML repository you can create a single copy-of-record where all your information can be stored and easily accessed using the powerful XQuery language.

Mark Logic’s XML repository lets you load your information without having to worry about converting it to a standard schema. The existing XML structure is retained and any unstructured information such as Microsoft Office files and PDFs are automatically converted to XML. Once loaded, your content is immediately available to users to drive the creation of new products.

XML Repository vs. Relational Database

Unlike relational databases, XML documents do not require a pre-defined schema, therefore, an XML repository can receive new documents containing new elements without additional administration overhead.

Reasons to Invest in an XML Repository

  • Relational databases cannot easily store and access information for which they are not preconfigured. In general, database architects attempt to envision all potential uses for the data at design time, to avoid potentially costly configuration changes after system deployment.
  • Optimizing reuse is further reason to use an XML repository instead of a relational database as a content repository. Any system designed to leverage the value of content must be flexible enough to allow documents to be reused in ways not envisioned by their original creator.
  • The ability to deliver large volumes of information, beyond the core capabilities of the content management system (CMS). Together, the CMS plus MarkLogic Server are a powerful team for content reuse and delivery.
  • Specifically designed for XML – XML repositories can load information in XML format much faster (50x or more) as well as provide significantly faster (50x or more) query capability against information once it has been loaded.
