Paid Access Online: The 'Freemium' Opportunity for Publishers

The paid-content debate took a new turn in the past year as publishers of all kinds--newspapers, magazines, aggregators and bloggers--began to look for new revenues online, in addition to advertising. There is a huge opportunity for publishers to generate subscription and other reader revenues for their digital products. New technologies enable the "freemium" model so that most online users may continue to get free access, but the most engaged readers will pay for full access to highly distinctive content and other services from their favorite brands. Gordon Crovitz is a founder of Journalism Online, which will provide publishers the technology tools and market intelligence to grow user revenues. He will describe the opportunity for paid access and how best to pursue this model, in ways that provide value to consumers.

Towards The New Normal – Thought Leaders Consider The Business Models And Strategies That Will Drive Us Post-Recession

Central to the issues around business model development are questions about the sturdiness of models built on paid content and the future development of advertising based models. This panel will question the assumptions around these models, look at the growth of a mixed economy in terms of revenue flows, and consider the alternatives. Will community-based models work? How successful has the sector been so far in harnessing the energies of users in this regard? Exploring another topic, B2B and professional publishers alike are getting increasingly committed to workflow and process-based developments, where content is modeled around the tasks that users must accomplish. But if this is the future, then do information players become enterprise software developers? How do they meet new competitive challenges along the way? And finally, the panel will consider models that sell content bundled into various devices and look at the implications of mobile content in this context.
