Track 1 - Getting Started with MarkLogic Server (Hands On)

Audience: New developers and product managers

Morning Session, 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Instructor: Ruth Stryker – Senior Instructor, MarkLogic University
Spend the morning with senior consultants from MarkLogic getting oriented to MarkLogic Server. You'll install the server on your laptop or use an EC2 instance provided for the class. Next, you will work through loading documents, configuring your database, writing basic queries, and constructing a very basic application in MarkLogic. By the end of the morning session you will have a functional application up and running!

Afternoon Session, 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Instructor: TBD
We will begin with a review of ApplicationBuilder and the SearchAPI. We will look at what functionality is provided out of the box with these tools, and how you can extend them to suit the needs of your project. In the class we will load sample documents, build an application, then add features to the application by extending the code that is generated by ApplicationBuilder. By the end of the afternoon session you will have used our best practices for extending the functionality of this powerful tool.

Track 2: Advanced topics on MarkLogic Server Architecture and Performance (Lecture)

Audience: Architects and experienced MarkLogic developers

Morning Session, 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Instructor: Fernando Mesa, Principal Technologist
Senior Consultants from MarkLogic will lead a lively discussion on the architecture of MarkLogic Server. We will cover the basics for how MarkLogic stores information, how it manages transactions, and how it integrates with other technologies such as Java, .NET, and SOA architectures. We will also discuss how best to architect your solution to meet the availability needs of your application. If you are contemplating how best to integrate MarkLogic into your existing infrastructure, this is the session for you.

Afternoon Session, 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Instructors: MarkLogic Performance Team
Performance experts from MarkLogic will discuss recent performance tests, best practices, and some recommendations on sizing of MarkLogic instances. Many factors can impact the performance of your MarkLogic application – the storage system, network, server hardware, database configuration, and the structure of your queries. In this session you will learn best practices for designing and optimizing your MarkLogic solution.

Track 3: Principles of XSLT for XQuery Writers (Lecture)

Audience: Experienced MarkLogic XQuery Programmers

Session, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Instrutors: Ken Holman, CTO Crane Softwrights Ltd. and Norm Walsh, Principal Technologist
MarkLogic Server 4.2 introduces support for XSLT 2.0 to complement its support for XQuery 1.0. If you've been working with XQuery in MarkLogic but are not familiar with XSLT, this lecture-style class will provide you the fundamentals you need to understand XSLT. There will be some hands-on exercises to help illustrate concepts of the class. We will also explore how XSLT is used in MarkLogic 4.2, and how it can be combined with XQuery to provide powerful capabilities around XML search, manipulation, and delivery.
