James Suroweicki

James SuroweickiJames Surowiecki has a gift for looking at interesting topics from surprising angles. He is the author of the much-acclaimed book The Wisdom of Crowds, which has this amazing subtitle: Why The Many Are Smarter Than The Few And How Collective Wisdom Shapes Business, Economies, Societies And Nations. Mr. Surowiecki writes a bi-weekly financial column for The New Yorker that demonstrates the qualities the magazine is famous for—valuable insights, a human face on the topic, and fine writing. He’s written on a wide variety of subjects for other major publications, as well, including The New York Times Magazine, Wired, and The Wall Street Journal. Before writing for The New Yorker, he wrote “The Bottom Line” column for New York magazine, and was a contributing editor at Fortune. Jim has an eye for the latest research in lots of fields and a talent for connecting social, political and economic trends to the course of business.

Whit Andrews

Whit AndrewsWhit Andrews is a VP and Distinguished Analyst at Gartner who leads its Enterprise Search efforts. He works in the Information Infrastructure group. His research interests also include Digital Asset Management, the Hostile Information Ecosystem and componentized content. Before he joined Gartner, he was a Senior Editor at Internet World magazine, and prior to that he was a print journalist covering environmental issues, crime and anything else lying around first thing in the morning when it was time to go to work.

He has won the Thought Leadership Award and the Golden Quill for excellence in research writing. He has also won two Eddy awards for poor writing. He loves all the awards equally, but in different ways. He received an A.B. in political science and English from Duke University a ways back.

Stephen Arnold

Stephen ArnoldStephen is the President of ArnoldIT and a technology and financial analyst with more than 30 years of experience. Stephen has extensive operational and entrepreneurial experience, able to bridge the gap between new ideas and the financial implications of a technology.

He has worked in all aspects of software and online systems since graduating from college. Stephen is the author of six books and over 50 journal articles. In October 2004, CMSWatch.com published Stephen’s 450-page “The Enterprise Search Report.” This report profiles 27 enterprise search engines and includes management, budgeting, and technical information. His newest study is “The Google Legacy” to be published by Infonortics, Ltd. in Tetbury, Glou. in the summer of 2005.

Dr. Daniel J. Clancy

Dr. Daniel J. ClancyDr. Daniel J. Clancy, is the Engineering Director for Google Book Search. The goal of the Google Book Search project is to digitize the world’s books and make them searchable online. Google is working with both publishers and libraries as part of this project. Prior to coming to Google in January 2005, Dr. Clancy was the Director of the Exploration Technologies Directorate at NASA Ames Research Center. The Directorate supports over 700 people performing both basic and applied research in a diverse range of technology areas intended to enable both robotic and human exploration missions. Technology areas include Intelligent Systems, High-end Computing, Human-Centered Systems, Bio/Nanotechnology, Entry Systems and others. In this role, Dr. Clancy played numerous roles at the agency level including participating in the team that developed the agency’s plan to return men to the Moon and eventually Mars.

Dr. Clancy received his PhD from the University of Texas at Austin in artificial intelligence. While in school, Dr. Clancy also worked at Trilogy Corporation, the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Xerox Webster Research center. Dr. Clancy received a Bachelor of Arts from Duke University in 1985 in computer science and theatre.

David Kellogg

President and CEO, MarkLogic

David Kellogg Dave has worked in the database and applications software industry for over 20 years, and has strong experience in marketing, operations, strategy, and product lifecycle management. Prior to joining MarkLogic, Kellogg served as senior vice president of worldwide marketing at Business Objects, a leading business intelligence software company. Kellogg was a key member of the executive team that grew Business Objects from $30M in revenues and 250 people to over $850M in revenues and over 4,000 people during his nine years there. Before Business Objects, Kellogg was vice president of marketing at Versant Object Technology, a provider of object database management systems. Prior to that, he held a number of technical and marketing positions with Ingres Corporation, a maker of relational database systems and tools. Kellogg has a dual bachelor’s degree in geophysics and applied mathematics from the University of California at Berkeley, and a master’s degree in business administration from Saint Mary’s College.

Christopher Lindblad

Founder and Chief Architect, MarkLogic

Chris is a seasoned technologist with over 20 years of software development experience. Before founding MarkLogic, Chris was the architect of Ultraseek Server, Infoseek’s enterprise search application, now one of Autonomy’s principal products following the acquisition of Verity. Chris had overall responsibility for the creation of Ultraseek Server, including the architecture, design, and development. Prior to Infoseek, Chris pursued post-doctoral research in high-speed networks and real-time video processing at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). During his research tenure at MIT, Chris authored over 15 publications in internet and multi-media technologies. Chris holds a bachelor’s degree in engineering and computer science from the California Institute of Technology, and a master’s degree and Ph.D. in computer science from MIT.

Jason Monberg

Vice President of Product Management

Jason brings to MarkLogic deep experience building and managing server based products for both corporate and consumer markets, as well as consulting for large companies delivering enterprise solutions. Prior to joining MarkLogic, Jason was founder of Dashlight Software, a Web-based application that enables users to manage personal information online from any device or location. Before Dashlight, Jason was vice president of application products at Composite Software, a leading provider of virtual data integration software. In his career, Jason additionally founded two technology start-ups – Carbon Five, a purveyor of J2EE development solutions, and Sparks.com, a consumer gift and personalization company where he also served as chief technology officer. Jason holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Wesleyan University.

Ron Avnur

Vice President of Engineering

Ron Avnur has been working in the fields of database management systems and enterprise search engines for over 10 years, and joined MarkLogic Corporation in 2003 prior to its initial product release. His experience includes both Silicon Valley start-ups and large enterprise software companies, where he has specialized in database query optimization and performance. Ron held engineering, consulting and pre-sales positions at Cohera, a distributed database startup eventually acquired by PeopleSoft. In other positions, he helped lead business development at Business Layers, a security software startup acquired by Netegrity and also served as a programmer at Informix Software, which was purchased by IBM in 2001. Ron holds a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering and computer science and a master's degree in computer science from University of California, Berkeley.
